Ryan Ong

Director, International Business Policy, National Association of Manufacturers

Ryan Ong serves the director for international business policy at the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the largest industrial association in the United States. In this role, he works with NAM’s roughly 14,000 member companies to improve the global competitiveness of manufacturers in the United States, eliminating problematic trade barriers around the world and promoting engagement and agreements to open new markets.

 Mr. Ong spearheads the organization’s efforts to tackle global standards and regulatory barriers and global protection of intellectual property protection and supports advocacy to expand investor protections in trade agreements and bilateral negotiations. Mr. Ong also leads NAM’s direct and coalition efforts focused on international organizations and initiatives impacting manufacturers, as well as efforts to strengthen market opportunities and tackle trade and market access barriers in China and India. He has served in this role since January 2016.

 Previously, Mr. Ong ran the US-China Business Council (USCBC) Business Advisory Services division, leading a team of experts informing and advocating on business, policy, and operational issues in China and serving as the organization’s in-house expert on innovation, standards, and intellectual property protection. Mr. Ong also has a range of experience working in the public, non-profit and academic sectors, including the Duke University Center on Globalization, Governance & Competitiveness, the U.S. Department of State, the North Carolina Department of Commerce, and The Carter Center.

 Mr. Ong holds an M.A. in international relations from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), a B.A. in international studies and biology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and a certificate in China studies from the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, where he studied Chinese politics, economics and international relations in Mandarin Chinese.  He is proficient in Mandarin Chinese.
