Chemical Reform One Step Closer to Reality

Over the past year, through our collective efforts with the American Alliance for Innovation (AAI), JPMA and its partners have met with more than 100 Congressional offices regarding the importance of updating chemical regulation, known as TSCA reform, to our industry. Because of this work and because of the continued outreach to Congressional Members by JPMA's members, the US Senate passed S 697, the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, via voice vote on the evening of December 17.
Successful TSCA reform legislation would establish stronger federal chemical regulation, undercutting the push for states to adopt their own, often conflicting, substance requirements. This legislation continues to have broad support among industries and mainstream environmental groups.
This is a tremendous win for our industry, but the work is not yet complete! In 2016, the legislation will move to a Conference Committee, comprised of members of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, in order to work out their collective differences between their respective versions of the legislation. JPMA will continue to keep you apprised of our ongoing initiatives.
