JPMA - Crib Bumpers/Liners Proposed Rulemaking by CPSC

Wednesday, April 1, 2020   (1 Comments)

To support parents in selecting safe products for the care of young children, JPMA formally petitioned the CPSC in 2012 to create a mandatory rule that defers to the ASTM standard for crib bumpers. JPMA is pleased the CPSC is advancing action toward a final rule that will serve as a uniform national standard that distinguishes between unsafe pillow-like bumpers and safer products within the category.

The majority of crib bumpers available on the market today should already meet the updated rule, as manufacturers have been engaged throughout the standard development process and continue to work diligently to ensure products meet or exceed this new standard. This will also put global producers and direct importers on notice that non-compliant products will not be allowed to be imported into and sold in the United States.

JPMA will continue to encourage this important work through engagement in the ASTM standard setting and CPSC rulemaking processes. We applaud the CPSC's action and anticipate continued commitment to the process.

Once enacted States and localities will have to adhere to such requirements and cannot impose a non-identical requirement.
