Recently the Twitter community came together in response to a desperate father’s call for a special “little blue cup” for his 13-year-old son, Ben, who has autism and will not drink from another cup. The cup is manufactured by JPMA member Tommee Tippee, but was discontinued in that style.

Ben’s father, Marc Carter, explained to PEOPLE magazine that his son had previously been hospitalized twice with severe dehydration after his cup was lost and he refused to drink for five days straight. As his son ages, Carter realized that his son’s cup would become more difficult to replace. After years of scouring online sites, he decided to take to Twitter. Since then his message has been retweeted over 20,000 times using #CupForBen. Carter started receiving spare cups from all over the world.

Tommee Tippee quickly began working to help by monitoring the Twitter and Facebook responses and acting on behalf of the family to collect all the cups being donated and coordinate the delivery. But their help didn’t stop there.

The firm told the Chronicle: “Like people all over the world, we’ve been incredibly touched by Ben’s story, and wanted to do everything we could to help find the cups he loves.

“We asked our staff in offices across the world to look through archived product samples in case we had a case of them hidden in a cupboard or warehouse. Unfortunately we didn’t, as it’s almost 20 years since this style of cup was manufactured, so we looked into the possibility of creating a special production run for Ben.”

They were able to find the mold for the cup and will be running a special production run of 500 cups to ensure that Ben and his parents will have enough for the rest of his life. The production will start soon and the company hopes to have all of the cups to the Carter family by the new year.
