There are multiple news stories covering a study in today’s issue of American Pediatrics addressing a 21-year survey entitled “Injuries associated with strollers and carriers among children in the United States, 1990-2010.” Click here to read the abstract.

The study reports that although children's falls from car seats and strollers have decreased, the number of significant head injuries associated with these falls have increased. CNN's headline related to the story reads "Strollers, car carriers send thousands of kids to ERs." This story will likely continue in the news cycle for several days. News outlets have already contacted JPMA for a statement and Julie Vallese, JPMA’s managing director of public & government affairs is heading our media response on this issue.

JPMA has developed a public statement on carrier and stroller safety that you can share with members of the media should they contact you for a statement or questions about the study. Click here to download the statement on carrier and stroller safety. It reads:

“The member manufacturers of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) are committed to providing parents and caregivers safe and convenient products to assist in transporting children. Strollers and carriers perform a tremendous service by making it easier to safely transport a child.

As safety advocates, JPMA and its members are committed to educating and informing consumers about the safe use and best practices of using strollers and carriers. It is important for parents to follow a few simple steps to ensure children are transported safely.

  • Always use the secure straps
  • When unfolding the stroller always lock it and listen for the click
  • Always apply the brakes when stationary
  • Use the storage basket underneath and never put bags and purses on the handles
  • Never allow a child to stand up in a stroller
  • Never leave a child unattended
  • Always follow manufacturers’ guidelines for size, weight, use and care”
