Is This Lullaby Twisted or What?

The other day my daughter and I were playing with her baby dolls.  I picked up one of them and began to sing Rock a Bye Baby.

Rock a Bye Baby on the tree tops

Wait a second, why is this baby in the tree tops?

When the wind blows, the cradle will rock

Okay, wind and a baby in the tree tops, wth?

When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall

This sounds like more of a nightmare than a lullaby

And down will come baby, cradle and all

It Shouldn't Be This Hard

I’ve never described myself as a worry wart…and then I became a mom and everything changed. It started the moment I heard that first scream, or was it delayed slightly and that was my initial worry? Eventually it became nonstop. Is she gaining or losing weight? When can I expect her first word? When should I introduce that first food?

If I Could Turn Back Time

I had the opportunity to volunteer in my daughter’s preschool class today and I am confident I was more excited than she was. The anticipation the past few days was growing and it was like the first day of school for me. I laid out what I was going to wear. I was up early excited for what the new day was going to bring.

Would her friends like me? Would I be the cool mom that I try so hard to be?

Sing it Again!

Kids love (and learn) from repetition, but singing "The Wheels on the Bus" for the 15th time today will surely make you go insane, right? Add some flavor to the old nursery rhyme repertoire which is sure to get your little one excited...and mom and dad out of the song slump:

I'm A Little Snowman (to the tune of I'm A Little Teapot)

I'm A Little Snowman, Short And Fat.

Here Are My Buttons,

Here Is My Hat.

When The Sun Comes Out,

I Cannot Play,

I Just Slowly Melt Away.

Celebrate Safely

Being married to a firefighter, I am all too familiar with the devastation that fire can create. Many a nights, my husband is not playing with us or sleeping next to me because he is out serving his community. Fortunately, most often they are false alarms, but he has also saved many homes and seen many burn to the ground.  He is a true hero in my mind.

Did You Know Babies Grow Up?

Did you know babies grow up? I had no idea until the other day when I realized that my baby was 5!

I remember being pregnant for the first time and how consumed I was with the changes in my body, mind, and house. I could not fathom how much such a little person could take over my life.

My life changed forever the day I laid eyes on my daughter. For the past several years I have spent every second of every day and night keeping her safe and happy.

I Forgot What it was like to "play dolls"

Sometimes it’s easy to forget what it’s like to be a kid.  We get so busy rushing around, stressing over paying bills and trying to keep the family routine running smoothly that we overlook the world from our child’s eyes.

Poison Control

My parents were watching my daughters one day and I left prescription cough medicine for my 2 year old from the doctor. In addition to the medication being in pharmacy packaging outlining the dosage instructions, the medicine bottle was also childproof. I dropped them off and left unconcerned and confident that they would be safe. Late in the afternoon, I call my parents to check in on my four and two year old. My mom proceeds to tell me that my daughter is acting really different. "She just seems out of it," my mom tells me.

A Little Meal Planning Goes a Long Way!

Before I had my little one and even six or seven months into her life, my husband and I were the worst meal planners.  We often found ourselves asking at least two nights out of the week “what should we have for dinner” at 6:30 p.m., only to find that nothing was defrosted.  Inevitably, we were headed to Panera Bread or Chick Fil-A for some quick take out.
